Mecklenburg County libraries to resume regular hours
On September 13, seven branches of the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County (PLCMC) will once again be open on Sundays from 1 – 6 p.m.: Main Library, ImaginOn, Independence, Morrison, South County, University City and North County.
The library instituted shortened “summer hours” at these seven locations as part of an effort to reduce the Library’s operating budget by 10 percent as requested by Mecklenburg County, the library’s primary funding agency. While the decision wasn’t easy, library leadership felt that reduced hours during the summer would have the least impact on customers, especially students.
“Now that school is back in session, we’re very pleased to have some libraries available again to students on Sundays,” says Library spokesperson Sarah Poole. “Libraries are an important homework resource, especially to families who don’t have computers at home.”
Some library services are available around-the-clock, including the library’s 24-hour book drops, online account access and catalog searching at www.plcmc.org, and the library’s automated telephone renewal line at 704.416.7363.
Information on hours of operation for all 24 Mecklenburg County library locations is available at www.plcmc.org
Since its founding in 1903 as a Carnegie Free Library, PLCMC has provided community service and outreach to the citizens of the Charlotte area. One of the premier libraries in the country, PLCMC has been recognized as a “Five Star” library in a national index of public library service from Library Journal and was named winner of the 2006 National Award for Library Service. The library sponsors a variety of community-based programs, from computer and Internet workshops to the award-winning Novello Festival of Reading, a celebration of the joys of reading and learning. With 24 locations, 1.4 million volumes, 79,000 DVDs, CDs and audiobooks, and a vast selection of titles available to download from the library’s web site, PLCMC is dedicated to its mission of expanding minds, empowering individuals and enriching the community.
