Located centrally uptown in the heart of Charlotte's Arts & Education district, the Main Library offers a multitude of services, materials, programs and meeting rooms as well as supports the activities of the library’s twenty-three branch locations and outreach services. Visitors to Main Library enter on the main level, which showcases the newest and high-demand materials including bestsellers, audio books, a wide selection of fiction titles, and a popular ongoing book sale. Here you’ll also discover Main Library’s public art, a beautiful and impressively large mosaic of Romare Bearden's Before Dawn. The first floor Movies and Music Room houses a large collection of DVDs and music CDs with professional staff on hand to help you with your selections. The Movies & Music Room also features a wireless space with tables and chairs for people to sit and enjoy the street view while using their wireless laptops.
Everyone is welcome in the World Language Center, located on the main level.
The World Language Center reaches out to immigrants and local citizens in extending access to language instruction materials. The World Language Center also provides audio books for language instruction. Books and pamphlet information on immigration and citizenship are available, as is computer access to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service Web site. A sitting area is provided to encourage families to visit, and to use the children's resources while parents practice language instruction using Mango Languages. This resource offers instruction in 12 languages and 3 ESL programs with advanced technologies to make learning incredibly fun, simple and effective with both in-library and remote access for users. Visit the second floor for non-fiction, periodicals and research.
The second floor of Main Library offers customers full-service, professionally staffed reference assistance, a large collection of books, media, and reference materials, and computers with electronic resources and Internet access. This is also home to the non-fiction collection. Books in this collection cover art, literature, science, technology, the social sciences and other fields. The non-fiction area has designated quiet areas for concentrated study and wireless laptop use.

The second floor is home to both the Business Collection and the Foundation Center Cooperating Collection, a body of resources that individual researchers and nonprofit organizations can use to research funding opportunities from foundations and corporations. As a member of the Foundation Center’s nationwide network of libraries, community foundations, and related agencies, the Main Library offers free access to print and electronic resources to locate grants and grantmakers. The Business Collection provides a vast selection of business directories, industry guides, investment information, demographics and marketing publications and electronic resources.

The Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room, located on the third floor of Main Library, houses historical information on Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and North Carolina as well as genealogical and current information, especially resources focusing on the eastern part of the United States. The Virtual Village, located on the lower level of Main Library, includes technology ranging from basic to advanced. Virtual Village offers almost 90 computers for Center City residents and visitors to get their Internet fix or do more complicated tasks like craft the perfect resume or learn how to use Excel.
