One Search Frequently Asked Questions
(back to Online Resources)

  • What is One Search? (back to top)

One Search is an online research tool, powered by Webfeat, that allows you to search many of the library's licensed database products at one time. The tool includes 17+ of the general reference, literary and poetry databases that the library offers remotely. In addition to the products that are included in One Search, you also have access to over 50+ other licensed database products through our listing of Individual Databases and NCLive (a collection of research databases offered in conjunction with the state library)

  • Why isn't every product/database available online included in One Search? (back to top)

Resources were selected for general content, broad subject coverage, and compatibility with WebFeat. Databases that cannot be integrated into the WebFeat's One Search interface cannot be included. Individual access to all 50+ electronic resource databases can be found on the online resources page under "Individual Databases"

  • How do I search for images only? (back to top)

On the advanced search page, you can search for images only by placing a check in the 'image only' box. Only resources that include pictures will appear in the search results.

  • How do I search for full-text only? (back to top)

On the advanced search page, place a check in the 'full text' box and only full-text articles and books will appear in the search results.

  • Why do the products appear in a different order after each search? (back to top)

Since One Search pulls results from multiple databases at the same time, the database that returns the results fastest for that particular search will appear at the top. This will vary from one search to the next.

  • Can I search for an exact phrase? (back to top)

There is no perfect method for exact phrase searching in One Search since different databases have different parameters. However, using "Quotation Marks" around your search term will help limit most results to exact phrase.

  • How do I search business or health topics? (back to top)

Since these are specialized databases, they are not included in One Search. However, you can still find access to these and many other databases under the Individual Database Search use the Subject Search option, which will show you all the electronic products we have available for a specific topic such as business or health. Each of the databases listed will need to be searched individually.

  • Where can I find a database I used to use? (back to top)

Underneath the One Search option, there is an alphabetical listing of all the databases PLCMC offers remote access to. This list can also be viewed by subject or Full text.

  • Why do some databases have more results then others? (back to top)

The number of results that appear under each database heading is governed by the individual database itself. Some databases may show 10 results, other 25, etc. However, you can always get to the next results set by clicking on "Next Set"

  • Why do I need to enter my PLCMC library card number to see the results in One Search? (back to top)

Because the One Search tool gathers results from individual database products that the Library subscribes to, you must use enter your PLCMC library card number to view search results. The one exception is search the online catalog only, you do not need to enter your library card number to view the catalog.

  • I'm not seeing any results when I do search using One Search? (back to top)

To view results in One Search it is recommended that you use Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater. If you are unable to view results from One Search, you can search the database product directly and still get results.

  • How can I tell what database my result is from? (back to top)

Look for information at the end of the article, such as copyright. A Big Chalk copyright means it is an electric library resource. When you have printed your article or you are finished viewing it, close it to return to the results list. Find the title of the article/image you were viewing (it might still be highlighted), and see what database the results are listed under.
