Unless a specific location is indicated, hires are made for the overall system and placement could occur in any of our 24 locations depending on need. Putting the right person in the right job is extremely important for the applicant and the Library. We utilize a multi-stage interviewing process which allows the applicant and the hiring department the opportunity to fully explore the applicants interest, ability and placement in a position. The Library also utilizes behavioral interviewing for all positions. Through behavioral interviewing applicants share their past experiences which helps to predict future actions in similar situations.

Full Job Descriptions

POSITION TITLE: Library Services Associate

POSITION NUMBER: 20012512

LOCATION: Davidson Branch

STARTING SALARY: $11.10/hr., no benefits

APPLICATION DEADLINE: 12/3/2009

DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Performs all circulation functions (shelving, check in, holds, weeding for condition, etc); Uses Horizon to assist patrons with checking in and out, issuing cards, taking care of fines & fees, placing holds, etc.; Assists patrons with computer questions and with finding information or materials; Merchandizes the collection and promotes library programs/services; Performs additional duties as assigned such as participation on teams, special projects, working on programs, etc.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: GED or high school diploma required; additional education preferred. Flexibility, strong customer service orientation and work ethic, ability to work well with the public and to work collaboratively with staff, multicultural sensitivity, good communication skills, good organizational and time management skills, basic computer proficiency. Preferred: Ability to communicate in more than one language; public service or previous library experience; familiarity with Horizon or other automated library system.

WORK SCHEDULE: 19 hrs per week involving some evenings and weekends.

POSITION TITLE: Library Services Specialist I

POSITION NUMBER: 20006457

LOCATION: Steele Creek Branch

STARTING SALARY: $24,629-$30,787

DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Assists patrons at the Circulation Desk checking materials in and out; places holds; creates and updates patron records; collects fines; assists patrons in locating and using library materials; maintains specific collections of library materials and appearance of branch collection; shelves materials; collaborates with Librarians to deliver programming and outreach services; assists with producing book displays, reader's advisory lists, programming for the public, and other duties as assigned by supervisor.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: A high school diploma or G.E.D. is required. Some college and 1-2 years of library experience preferred. Knowledge of Integrated Library Systems software, i.e. Horizon, and the ability to communicate in more than one language is helpful. Computer proficiency, accuracy, attention to detail and high levels of productivity are required; familiarity with books/authors very helpful. Excellent written, verbal and listening skills; demonstrated ability to maintain stable and consistent performance; proficiency utilizing current technology and office management software applications; flexibility and ability to interact with the public and coworkers in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment; ability to exert 20 pounds of force occassionally and 10 pounds of force frequently. Job requires lifting, pushing and pulling loaded bins, as well as stooping and standing for long periods of time.

WORK SCHEDULE: 40 hours per week rotating schedule involving nights and weekends.

POSITION TITLE: Library Services Specialist II (Children's)

STARTING SALARY: $28,040-$35,050

DESCRIPTION OF WORK: The Library Service Specialist II works with fellow staff to serve the needs of patrons in a busy public library. From shared children's/adult reference desk, the library service specialist provides reference and reader's advisory services to patrons of all ages, instructs and assists in the use of electronic resources, and performs circulation duties as required. Special emphasis for this position is on planning and presenting developmentally appropriate programs for youth from birth through 12 years of age; promoting and maintaining the children's collection; marketing library resources and services.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: A high school diploma or G.E.D. is required. Some college and 1-2 years of library experience preferred. Knowledge of children's literature and the developmental stages of children; demonstrated skills in creative and engaging programming techniques. Must possess good organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Must be technologically adept, including proficiency using Microsoft Office and the internet, with a willingness to learn. Team attitude and flexibility are essential. Must have a strong commitment to outstanding customer service as well as a genuine interest and desire to work with children. Spanish language proficiency is a plus.

WORK SCHEDULE: 40 hours per week rotating schedule involving evenings, Saturdays and Sundays.
