Theft or Damage of Library Materials

Taking materials from The Library - including books, magazines, reference materials, videos, cassettes, CDs, microfilm or any other materials - without proper check-out procedures is not just against Library rules. It is a crime.

Any cutting, tearing, defacing or destroying Library materials is not just inconsiderate of others who wish to use those materials. It is a crime.

North Carolina statute Chapter 14-398 says that theft or damage of Library property with a value of less than $50 is a misdemeanor with a penalty of fine or imprisonment at the court's discretion. If the value of the property which is stolen or damaged exceeds $50, the act is a felony, subject to appropriate punishment. In addition, The Library will enforce its own penalties, which may include civil suit for damages and/or banishment from Library premises for a limited period or permanently.

Do yourself and all of Mecklenburg County citizens a favor. Follow Library rules for use of materials.

The Library belongs to all of us. Treat your property with care.
