Aunt Eater loves a mystery
Doug Cushman (1987) , 40-80 pages
Audience: Primary (k-3rd grade)
Category: Humor, Mystery, Read Aloud
|
You won't find Aunt Eater's long
anteater nose buried in an anthill.
Her nose is usually buried in her
favorite kind of book--a mystery book!
And when she's not reading, she finds
mysterious doings all around her.
First, her bag is switched with another
on a train trip, a spooky shadow
appears without warning on the wall
during a party, a puzzling note is
left in her mailbox, and then a very
suspicious-looking character is seen
going into her neighbor's house. Best
of all, Aunt Eater really proves her
mystery solving skills when she figures
out a way to find her neighbor's
runaway cat, Sam. See if you can help
Aunt Eater spot the clues, that is, of
course, if you're not laughing too
hard!

Chato's Kitchen
Gary Soto (1995) , under 40 pages
Illustrated by Susan Guevara
Audience: Preschool, Primary (k-3rd grade)
Category: Humor, Multicultural, Read Aloud (This book has outstanding illustrations)

Chato invites his new neighbors to
dinner. This may sound nice, but Chato
the cat wants to eat his mouse dinner
guests. They are first unsure about the
cat’s intentions, but soon decide that
he is just being nice. It is a good
thing they have a special friend to
take them to the dinner party and
protect them from Chato. This story in
English mixed with Spanish words has a
surprising and deserving ending. The
illustrations are delightful and
children will laugh at the funny poses
and faces of the characters. This book
contains a glossary in the front and
would be ideal for bilingual storytimes.

Imagine a place where, instead of
regular weather--sun, rain, or snow,
food falls from the sky. In the town
of Chewandswallow, the residents eat
whatever the "weather" brings and there
are no grocery stores. Showers of
hamburgers, soupy rain, and mashed
potato snowstorms bombard the town.
All is fine and well until the foody
weather gets out of control. Will the
town be buried in burgers? Is there
hope for Chewandswallow? Grab a fork
and spoon and visit this spaghetti-
twisted tale of food, fun, flavor, and
fiasco!
