Audience: Primary (k-3rd grade)
Category: African-American, Read Aloud, Realistic Fiction (This book has outstanding illustrations)

The joys and fears of a first haircut
are featured in this heartwarming
story. Miles gives his point of view
about the day he and his daddy went to
Seymour's Barbershop to get haircuts.
The shop is buzzing with activity. Men
are playing checkers, watching
basketball on TV, and waiting in chairs
for their turn in the barber chair.
Miles thinks about the many styles he
could get, but he gets frightened when
Mr. Seymour begins to use scissors on
his hair. Read to discover how he
overcomes his fear and you may be
surprised at what haircut he gets.
Lewis' remarkable work with watercolors
is essential in making this an
outstanding
book about an uncommon father and son
who experience a common rite of passage.

Mrs. LaRue's dog, Ike, is misbehaving.
So she does the unthinkable-sends him
to Brotweiler Canine Academy, an
obedience school for dogs. Ike is SO
hurt that Mrs. LaRue would even
consider the idea of sending him away.
However, he sends her letters of how
horrible life is at Brotweiler. But is
life for Ike really that bad?
Mark Teague has created a dramatic
character in Ike LaRue. The
illustrations are terrific and the
story is great. Check out Ike's fate at
Brotweiler's in this humorous picture
book.
