Diary of a Worm
Doreen Cronin (2003) , under 40 pages
Illustrated by Harry Bliss
Audience: Preschool, Primary (k-3rd grade), Intermediate (4th-6th grade)
Category: Humor, Read Aloud (This book has outstanding illustrations)
|
Experience firsthand what it's like to
live life as a worm! Worm's diary
entries keep us squirming with laughter
as he dances the hokey-pokey, makes a
macaroni necklace, and teases his
sister. What other everyday activities
are going on underground that we don't
know about? You'll love getting the
dirt on this worm's life through his
journal entries. The
illustrations are bright and charming
and capture the sense of being on worm-
eye level. A nice story for
preschoolers through kindergarten.
This book is more fun than a can of
worms!

Romare Bearden (2003) , under 40 pages
Illustrated by Romare Bearden
Audience: Primary (k-3rd grade)
Category: Adventure, African-American, Historical, Multicultural, Read Aloud (This book has outstanding illustrations)

Li'l Dan is a slave boy whose parents
were sold away when he was "most
young." When he learns from a black
Union soldier that he is free,
everything in his world changes except
his love of his homemade drum. Li'l
Dan's story is scary and exciting, and
it shows that you don't have to be a
grown-up to make a difference in your
world.

It is the first day of school in the
second grade. Zack sits and waits for
his new teacher. He just knows that
this is going to be a BORING year. How
can school be exciting? THEN in walks
Miss Smith, who is as different as she
looks.
Still, it is class as usual-until Miss
Smith opens her storybook. And WOW!
Zack cannot believe his eyes!
Excitement fills the classroom along
with some surprises too. Michael
Garland's story and illustrations show
just how wonderful stories can be
exciting and fun!
