only to find you have STRIPES!! That's
just what happened to poor Camilla in
David Shannon's richly illustrated
book
Stripes . The doctor sees no
reason for Camilla not to go to
school,
since she is not contagious. The
children are utterly amazed and her
principal calls her a distraction!
Will
Camilla have stripes forever? You'll
have to read to
find out! Enjoy!

A Fine, Fine School
Sharon Creech (2001) , 40-80 pages
Illustrated by Harry Bliss
Audience: Primary (k-3rd grade)
Category: Humor, Read Aloud (This book has outstanding illustrations)
|
How would you like to go to school on
the weekends and on holidays and all
summer long? Tillie's principal, Mr.
Keene, loves his fine, fine school!
It's such a wonderful place that he
thinks that the teachers and students
should have more and more school. It's
up to Tillie to show Mr. Keene the
importance of learning away from
school, such as learning to
climb a tree and teaching her dog to
fetch. Will
Mr. Keene change his mind or will
Tillie and the other students have to
go to their fine, fine school all year
long? Read this fine, fine book to
find out.

Chloe, age 13 from California Yes, I know I am a bit old for these kind of books, but- actually, you're never too old. Picture books are for older readers too- my mom is becoming a librarian and is currently taking a class for kids 0-6-anyway...
A Fine,Fine School is a fine fine book. I really liked it in the fact that it explains that the teachers didn't want school to be year round either! Most kids think that teachers are punishing them, and they want to see them suffer. But really-the teachers are suffering too.

A Pizza the Size of the Sun
Jack Prelutsky (1996) , 120-160 pages
Illustrated by James Stevenson
Audience: Primary (k-3rd grade), Intermediate (4th-6th grade)
Category: Humor, Poetry, Read Aloud (This book has outstanding illustrations)
|
If you think poetry is boring, Jack
Prelutsky will be a big surprise. This
book is filled with poems that will not
only make you laugh out loud, but will
also be just perfect for reciting in
front of your class (if you should ever
have to do such a horrible thing)!
Just listen to some of these titles--
"Rat for Lunch!," "The Manners of the
Moopies," not to mention the hilarious
and suspenseful "I Made Something
Strange With My Chemistry Set"!
Prelutsky's poems are like potato chips-
-you can't read just one, and you'll
certainly see why he was named the
first children's poet laureate in
September 2006. The simple line
drawings by James Stevenson highlight
the humor of each piece.
