Chrysanthemum
Kevin Henkes (1991) , under 40 pages
Illustrated by Kevin Henkes
Audience: Primary (k-3rd grade)
Category: Humor, Read Aloud (This book has outstanding illustrations)
|
Chrysanthemum loved her name. “She
loved the way it sounded when her
mother woke her up. She loved the way
it sounded when her father called her
for dinner. And she loved the way is
sounded when she whispered it to
herself in the bathroom mirror.” But
when Chrysanthemum started school and
her teacher called out her name,
everyone giggled. The other kids
teased her and made fun of her long,
flowery name. Chrysanthemum just
wilted. Each
night her parents would cheer her up,
reminding her that her name was
beautiful and “absolutely perfect.”
Then, back to school, and the teasing
began again...Until the day the
class met their fabulous new music
teacher, Mrs. Twinkle--Mrs. Delphinium
Twinkle—who helps Chrysanthemum
blossom once again. Henkes, whose
stories and illustrations always
delight, presents
Chrysanthemum’s all-too-familiar story
with humor and charm.
