A Hat for Minerva Louise
Janet Morgan Stoeke (1994) , under 40 pages
Illustrated by Janet Morgan Stoeke
Audience: Toddlers, Preschool, Primary (k-3rd grade)
Category: Fantasy, Humor, Read Aloud, Winter (This book has outstanding illustrations)

Minerva Louise, the curious hen, loves
exploring in the snow. She decides
that if she had warm things to wear,
she could stay out and play in the snow
all day. She knows what is needed to
stay warm, but as usual mistakes one
object for another. She thinks a green
hose is a scarf, gloves are shoes, and
a flowerpot is a hat. What do you
think she mistakes two mittens for?
This book combines bright pictures with
large text. In addition to being a
great read-loud for young children, it
can also be enjoyed and read by
beginning readers.

A Porcupine Named Fluffy
Helen Lester (1986) , under 40 pages
Illustrated by Lynn Munsinger
Audience: Preschool, Primary (k-3rd grade)
Category: Fantasy, Humor, Read Aloud (This book has outstanding illustrations)
|
Fluffy the porcupine doesn't think his
name fits him very well no matter how
many marshmallows he eats or feathers
he rolls in. It isn't until he meets a
rhinoceros with an even more ill-
fitting name that Fluffy learns to like
his name and makes a new friend in the
process. Munsinger's colorfully
detailed illustrations add humor to
Lester's touching friendship story
about accepting who you are.

Have you ever asked the question, "Am I
beautiful?" As Hippo walks
around, he sees all sorts of animals.
All the parents call their
children beautiful, so Hippo starts to
wonder if he is, too. When he asks the
other parents if he is beautiful, none
of them seem to know what to say, so he
goes to the one person he knows he can
count on. You'll get caught up in
Hippo's charm with his silly antics and
the cute, colorful illustrations. It's
a funny, but touching book showing us
that we're all beautiful in our own way.
