Fire Alarm!
Nancy Krulik (2009) , under 40 pages
Illustrated by Bernice Lum
Audience: Primary (k-3rd grade)
Category: Beg. Chapter Books, Read Aloud, Realistic Fiction (This book has outstanding illustrations)
|
Miss Popper’s class is going on a field
trip. They learned about fire safety in
class and now they are going to visit a
fire station. When they arrive,
Firefighter Tom shows them around and
even lets them pretend to be
firefighters by ringing the bell and
sliding down the fire pole. There is
something for everyone to enjoy
including animal-loving Carlos, who
gets to meet Sparky the fire dog. But,
what will happen when Carlos decides to
hide somewhere in the fire station and
no one can find him? A wonderful
beginning chapter book with characters
that might remind you of yourself, your
classmates and friends. The large,
black and white illustrations on some
of the pages add to the fun.

Bad to the Bone
Lucy Nolan (2008) , 40-80 pages
Illustrated by Reed, Mike
Audience: Primary (k-3rd grade)
Category: Beg. Chapter Books, Humor
|
Down Girl is very smart in a doggie
kind of way. Her best friend is Sit.
Their enemy is Here Kitty Kitty.
Squirrels are bad. Cats stick to
things or sometimes they explode. Of
course, dogs are good.
The adventures and animal antics will
wake up your laughing place for sure.
The chase scenes are hysterical,
especially if Here Kitty Kitty is mixed
up in the game.
Bad to the Bone is part of the "Down
Girl and Sit" beginning chapter book
series.

Second-grader, Keena, is determined to
start the year off right by staying out
of trouble. The first day is great!
But, trouble comes on the second day
when she accidentally writes her
birthday as 9/2 on her paper birthday
cake instead of 2/9. When her teacher
announces Keena's birthday is the very
next day, September 2, and that she
will get to wear a brithday crown and
have chocolate cake, all she can say
is, "...I LOVE chocolate cake." Things
just happen to her! Keena doesn't mean
to get in trouble... or does she? Told
in journal entries, with expressive
illustrations, Keena's hilarious story
has twists and turns that will keep you
turning pages and cheering for her in
the end.

Alisa, age 7 from North Carolina I think Keena Ford is a funny book, because she gets her birthday date wrong. She tells the class it is not her birthday and she does not get any cake. Her best friend, Eric, tells her things about his all boys class that are not true. He said they get to write with pens, then Keena sees if thats true. She gets into trouble again. I think you should read this book.

Ms. Wiz Spells Trouble
Terence Blacker (2008) , 40-80 pages
Illustrated by Tony Ross
Audience: Primary (k-3rd grade)
Category: Beg. Chapter Books, Fantasy, Humor, Read Aloud, Realistic Fiction
|
Take a class of reluctant students; add
one rather unusual teacher and what do
you get? Trouble. Ms. Wiz is sent to
teach Class Three at St. Barnabas
School and everyone knows that the kids
in that class are a problem and
disruptive. But not for Ms. Wiz, who
wears weird clothes (tight jeans and
black nail polish) and has a strange
collection of class pets (cats, rats,
and an owl). Somehow, Ms. Wiz's
special style of teaching works with
the once wild class and each students
becomes a success. So does she have
magic powers or does it just seem that
way?
