The youngest child can learn about numbers and rhyme from reading this patchwork of counting fun! Hines has taken the art of quilting and stitched it to a classic nursery rhyme. She has created colorful quilted pictures made with patterned materials, thread, yarn and buttons. This is a great book for reading aloud or one on one.

Book cover Cat and Mouse New Review

Follow a lively little mouse running through the house carrying a little blue umbrella. Right on her tail is a cat playfully chasing her through three nursery rhymes. In “Hickory Dickory Dock”, they fly up the clock until the mouse uses the umbrella to float down. But, the fun doesn’t stop there. With only a white background, the large bold images seem to pop off of the pages. Adding to the visual appeal is the hand painted text with its varying sizes and shapes. This book can’t help but charm toddlers as well as adults.

Being lonely can make you grumpy. That’s what happens to a large gray cat living on his own. One night during a thunderstorm, a small orange kitten shows up. She’s determined to make the big cat like her. The large illustrations in this charming tale of friendship, manage to exude a lot of expression which small children will easily relate to. The large format of this book makes it excellent for reading to a group.

Book cover If Animals Kissed Good Night New Review
Ann Whitford Paul (2008) , under 40 pages
Illustrated by David Walker
Audience: Babies, Toddlers, Preschool
Category: Books & Babies, Read Aloud
(This book has outstanding illustrations)

A human mother uses her imagination and tells her daughter how she thinks animal parents kiss their babies goodnight. Examples are the papa walrus and his calf giving each other “scritchy-scratchy kisses”, the parrot and chick would “klick-klack their beaks”, and the seal and his calf would “blow big bubbled kisses”. A repeated feature is the sloth and her cub sloooooowly giving each other a kiss that lasts until the end of the book! The text is cleverly displayed on each page, sometimes even matching the animals or their movements. This is a charming story for bedtime or anytime with its cozy message and delightful illustrations.

What do you want to be when you grow up? In this charming picture book, a little bear explores the world with a grown-up bear. Along the way, the little bear watches how the big bear deals with the world. The little bear wants to be just like the big bear when it grows up! The adorable illustrations take you right there - you'll be swimming, fishing in waterfalls, and walking through the woods with the little bear as it learns from the big bear! This is a sweet book with a message to share with your little one.
