Cat and Mouse
Ian Schoenherr (2008) , under 40 pages
Illustrated by
Audience: Babies, Toddlers
Category: Books & Babies, Classics, Read Aloud (This book has outstanding illustrations)
|
Follow a lively little mouse running
through the house carrying a little
blue umbrella. Right on her tail is a
cat playfully chasing her through three
nursery rhymes. In “Hickory Dickory
Dock”, they fly up the clock until the
mouse uses the umbrella to float down.
But, the fun doesn’t stop there. With
only a white background, the large bold
images seem to pop off of the pages.
Adding to the visual appeal is the hand
painted text with its varying sizes and
shapes. This book can’t help but charm
toddlers as well as adults.

Follow a hungry wolf as he winds his
way through five fractured fairy tales
with hilarious results. Along the way
he encounters some wise-cracking sheep,
a fashion-challenged Little Red Riding,
a gosling with a karaoke machine and
the three little pigs. (Who knew their
names were Alan, Gordon and Blake?)
Will the poor wolf ever get some
dinner? The pictures in this oversized
book are done in comic panels with lots
of hilarious details. Puns and wordplay
add a great deal to the fun.

Do you like history and learning about
the past? Would you like to learn a few
words from another language? Then this
could be the book for you. In this re-
telling of the famous Canterbury Tales
by Chaucer are the adventures of a
group of pilgrims who make their
journey more pleasant by sharing
stories along the way. This new version
has been cleverly translated into
modern English and also includes some
of the original words which you can try
out just for fun. On top of that, it
has been written like a cartoon strip,
with plenty of amusing comments and
action. What a fun way to read some
classic literature and smile while you
do it! The pictures at the bottom of
each page are particularly funny-check
them out!

Party Shoes
Noel Streatfeild (2007) , under 40 pages
Illustrated by
Audience: Intermediate (4th-6th grade)
Category: Classics, Realistic Fiction, Summer

Selina has been sent to live with her
aunt and cousins during the Second
World War. One day she receives a
parcel (a rare thing indeed) which
contains a beautiful party dress and
matching shoes. How lovely, but how
frustrating too, when there is no
chance during a war that anyone will be
having a party where she can wear the
dress. So the cousins come up with a
master plan - to host a pageant that
they will write and produce
themselves. As the months pass the
pageant expands to include most of the
village, and as it grows, so does
Selina. Will she still fit into her
party dress and shoes?
