Poppy's Pants
Melissa Conroy (2009) , under 40 pages
Illustrated by Melissa Conroy
Audience: Primary (k-3rd grade), Adult/Parent
Category: Concept, Humor (This book has outstanding illustrations)
|
Poppy always wears khaki pants. He
likes to write and drink Clamato juice,
too. It’s a good thing that Penelope,
his granddaughter, likes to sew,
because he asks her to mend a hole in a
pair of his pants. Poppy doesn’t have a
favorite color, so he lets Penelope
choose what color thread to use. After
her mom irons the pants, Penelope works
her magic with a needle and some
aquamarine thread. Poppy is very
pleased with the results, and you’ll
love this book as much as he loves his
khaki pants. You’ll also enjoy Melissa
Conroy’s illustrations: photographs of
her delightful handcrafted “wooberry”
dolls! Which one is your favorite?

Prepare yourself for a book filled with
murder, mystery, mayhem and music.
When the composer is found decomposing,
the Inspector is called to follow his
senses and uncover where the murderer
is lurking. Which section of the
orchestra could the murderer be in? The
Inspector will leave no sound unturned
until he finds the culprit. But what
if it wasn’t a sound at all? What if
it was the . . . .? Snicket’s work is
an odyssey through an orchestra. With
an accompanying CD, this book brings to
life the Inspector’s search through the
orchestra pit. A fascinating book that
is as fun to listen to as it is to read!

Welcome to Chef George’s School of
Dessertology. Students (who just happen
to be all sorts of animals) learn how
to be a master dessert chef, just like
Chef George (who just happens to be an
owl). The students must pay attention
in class, and practice, practice,
practice! You will laugh at the silly
desserts these students make, but I bet
you will want to taste the fancy cake
that the little pink bunny baked. Do
you think the bunny is the only one who
listened to the teacher and followed
the directions? After you read the
book, you might want to try one of Chef
George’s eight delicious dessert
recipes with the help of a grown-up.
