Newbery Honor winner Marilyn Nelson (Carver: a Life in Poems/) has written a lovely poem that accompanies photographs of young ballet dancers from the Dance Theatre of Harlem. You will be delighted at the graceful beauty of Doris, Jalen, Raven M., and Raven B. These young girls show great strength, flexibility, and emotion from their hard work at the Dance Theatre of Harlem’s programs (Community, Pre- Professional, and Professional Company). This book is a work of art, and one that truly inspires.

What ever could you do if the food you hated decided it hated you too? Or if cheese wrote a sonnet and the toast passed away . . . what would a poem about them say? Filled with clever rhymes, laughable limericks, and happy haikus galore, this book is sure to make you want more: more cheesy poems and lines about broccoli, more poems about soda, pudding and beets. This book is really something great to eat. Oh, not to eat, I mean to read. So if you are ready to laugh, then let me set a plate for your because we are serving up the book Food Hates You, Too!

This tender and touching book shows the relationship between Little Bear and Little Bear's mom. The adventures of each day are shared with us by easy and fun rhyming text. The story is greatly enhanced by the beautiful soft and expressive illustrations that tell the story on their own! This reminds us that all our little bears follow our footsteps and how important it is to be aware of the example we set. If you like this book you should read the companion book, Me and My Dad!, which was a #1 New York Times Bestseller.

The youngest child can learn about numbers and rhyme from reading this patchwork of counting fun! Hines has taken the art of quilting and stitched it to a classic nursery rhyme. She has created colorful quilted pictures made with patterned materials, thread, yarn and buttons. This is a great book for reading aloud or one on one.

There is a lesson in this story for all of us, about being true to ourselves in a changing world. As JoEllen approaches her 13th birthday, she is given a school assignment to write an autobiography. Problem is, there are two JoEllens. The modern sophisticated 'Ellen' who lives with her organized and practical mother in the city during the week. Then there's the free spirited 'Joey' who spends weekends with her father roaming around in the country. Torn between her desire to please both her divorced parents, JoEllen can never quite be herself. This is a coming of age story beautifully and emotionally written in poetry form. In it we see that in spite of parental differences, JoEllen finds a way to become what she really wants to be.
