Hoop Kings: poems
Charles R. Smith Jr. (2007) , under 40 pages
Illustrated by
Audience: Intermediate (4th-6th grade)
Category: Poetry, Sports
|
Charles R. Smith Jr. grew up loving
basketball and manages to capture the
movement and excitement of the game
with his poetry. Each of the book’s
twelve poems centers around a player,
and just as each player has his own
individual moves; each poem has its own
individual style. Some are strong and
smooth, while others are up and in your
face like a rap lyric. The action
photos of the players echo the energy
of the poems. Whether you enjoy playing
basketball or just watching it you’re
sure to enjoy this book.

Mack feels like he is in his older
brother, Rory’s, shadow. Especially in
the eyes of his dad.
Both Mack and Rory play soccer really
well, but Rory has more awards. Also
each year there is a big race at the
town’s Danville Day celebration and
Rory won the last two years. This year
Mack has been training secretly to win
and for once he wants to beat Rory at
something. This novel is about
community status, friendship, and
competition. Mack’s honest narrative
and the original characters in the
book will appeal to many readers.
