Book cover The Problem with The Puddles New Review
Kate Feiffer (2009) , 160-200 pages
Illustrated by Tricia Tusa
Audience: Intermediate (4th-6th grade)
Category: Adventure, Humor, Realistic Fiction, Summer

Meet The Puddles--a very odd family-- Mom, Dad, 10-year-old Tom, and Baby, age 8. They are a strange, eccentric, but otherwise likeable bunch who cannot agree on anything, except that they like to disagree. On the way home from a beach trip they realize that they have forgotten the dogs, Sally, the chihuaua and Sally, the great dane. The stories of the humans, who return to find their dogs and the dogs quest to reunite themselves with the family, run side by side. There are various twists to the plot, of course, laughable moments and lots of chaos. At the end, all these sub-plots join together in one happy ending.

Mieka was always happy with her somewhat quirky life. She enjoyed her apartment, where the furniture her father picked out looked like something from the sixities, and her hand-me-down thrift store clothes made her feel special. But, that was before her best friend left her for someone more popular and before she went to Houston and saw her cousin Greta. Greta is beautiful, thin, neat and practically the best at everything. She's normal, which Mieka never knew could be so cool. Now Mieka may even have a chance at being normal. But then again what is normal?
