To Market, To Market

The familiar nursery rhyme "To Market,
To Market"
is expanded to introduce young children
to other
animals besides a "fat pig." This
hysterical tale
of a shopping trip gone sour includes a
pig, duck,
cow, hen, goose and other animals.
Toddlers and
preschoolers will be able to recognize
familiar
animals and will guess at the less
familiar ones.
After each trip "to market, to market"
the bought
animal runs wildly about until there is
complete
chaos in the woman's home. She finally
gives in
and buys vegetables at the market, and
shares her
"Hot soup for lunch!" with all of her
animal
"guests." Collages consisting of black
and white
photographs of the market and the
woman's home are
combined with bright, bold primary
color acrylics
and pastels depicting the items bought
at the
market. When using with babies, one can
easily
bounce baby on knee to rhythmic text.
Older
children will catch on to the
repetitive rhyme and
help with telling the story. A
delightful
read-aloud to be shared over and over
again.
