Margaret Read MacDonald (1998) , under 40 pages
Illustrated by Pat Cummings
Audience: Preschool, Primary (k-3rd grade)
Category: Folklore, Humor, Read Aloud (This book has outstanding illustrations)

Little Girl starts to pick
peas in her garden, but begins to feel
like somebody is following her. When
she discovers that this is true, she
sets out to catch the pesky
rabbit in the act, and stop him from
eating her peas. But like many stories
of
folklore, the rabbit has a trick up his
sleeve. Read to find out how the
naughty rabbit gets his freedom.
MacDonald’s simple, but enchanting
storytelling and the repeated refrains
(music score included)
add to the fun and participatory nature
of this story based on a Southern
folktale. 2003 Novello author and
illustrator Cummings’ pictures jump off
the page in vibrant colors and bold
shapes. This will be a favorite for
bedtimes, storytimes, and laptimes.
