Book cover Flossie & the Fox
Patricia McKissack (1986) , under 40 pages
Illustrated by Rachel Isadora
Audience: Preschool, Primary (k-3rd grade)
Category: Adventure, African-American, Humor

Flossie is a smart little girl who gets to match wits with a fox on her way to Miz Viola's place. The fresh eggs that Flossie carries are quite appealing to the fox. The fox is stymied by Flossie's refusal to acknowledge him as a fox. The contrast between the fox's uppity language and Flossie's 'down home' talk gives the story its humor. When Flossie declares "You aine' no fox!", the fox, very properly replies, "I have you know my reputation precedes me". The illustrations are in full color and show the personality of both Flossie and the fox. At the end of the story, the reader decides who is the most clever....Flossie or the fox.
