The Book of Everything
Guus Kuijer (translated by John Nieuwenhuizen) (2006) , 80-120 pages
Audience: Intermediate (4th-6th grade)
Category: Fantasy, Realistic Fiction

The world Thomas lives in is both
simple and fantastic. He tries to
capture it all in his "Book of
Everything." There is the incredible
hail storm that rips leaves from the
trees, wonderful music and his first
feelings of love. But there are also
the harsh words of his father followed
by further abusive behavior. It is a
world filled with wonder and pain.
Thomas deals with it all in a very
unique way, sometimes through
conversations with Diety, sometimes
just with his matter-of-fact neighbor.
You can decide what is real and what is
magical thinking as you turn the pages
into Thomas' world.
