This retelling of this well-known
folktale is refreshing and fun. Martina
the cockroach is getting married, but
her Cuban grandmother wants her to test
out her suitors first. She is suppose
to “accidentally” spill coffee on their
shoes and see how they react. This will
let her know how they act when they
lose their tempers. Her visitors
include a proud rooster, a smelly pig,
and a creepy lizard. Does she pick any
of them or does she find another that
suits her best? Along with a delightful
story, Deedy has mixed in Spanish words
and readers can learn their meanings by
reading the English text. Austin’s
illustrations have details that can be
enjoyed again and again.
