This heartwarming story is based on
actual events. In diary-like entries, a
girl from the United States relates the
time her family helped needy Europeans
after World War II from December 1946-
December 1948. It all starts with
helping one German family and soon they
are getting letters from many people in
need. Those in need send tracings of
their feet and this helps the young
girl and her mother collect pairs of
shoes from their neighbors and places
in the community. Also, the little
girl and her mother form a pen pal
relationship with one girl named Eliza,
whose father is missing. Judge's own
maternal grandparents and mother were
actually involved in this kind of
charity work. Wonderfully illustrated,
the book also contains photographs of
authentic items as well as objects that
were used during that time period.
