Gail Haley (1970) , under 40 pages
Illustrated by Gail Haley
Audience: Preschool, Primary (k-3rd grade)
Category: Award Books, Classics, Folklore, Multicultural, Read Aloud
(This book has outstanding illustrations)

Ananse the Spiderman wanted the Sky God's stories. But the Sky God laughed at him and gave him an impossible task: "bring me Osebo the leopard of the terrible teeth, Mmboro the hornet who-stings-like-fire, and Mmoatia the fairy whom-men-never-see". The Sky God thought Ananse was just a weak old man, but he did not know that Ananse had a few clever tricks up his sleeve. Read and discover why today "all stories belong to Ananse". The retelling of this old African tale and Haley's marvelous woodcut illustrations won her the 1971 Caldecott Award.

Abby, age 12 from North Carolina
An excellent picture book! This is a wonderful retelling of some of Anansi the spider man's tales.

Kyle, age 7 from Arizona
This book, A STORY, A STORY is really cool. It has a main character named "Ananse", he travels to the clouds and gets books from the guy that lives there in the sky and brought them back to earth (Africa). I liked this book. Kyle
