Book cover The Ghost of Sifty Sifty Sam
Angela Shelf Medearis (1997) , under 40 pages
Illustrated by Jacqueline Rogers
Audience: Primary (k-3rd grade)
Category: African-American, Humor, Read Aloud, Scary
(This book has outstanding illustrations)

Have you heard about the ghost of Sifty Sifty Sam? The folks of the East Texas woods have and no one wants to buy the house that the ghost is believed to be haunting. The realtor man decides to offer a $5,000 reward for "anyone brave enough and smart enough and crafty enough to stay in the house all night long". Along comes a chef named Dan who thinks he fits the requirements. Strangely, the bushel of groceries, a slab of fat back, and a frying pan that he brings with him become useful when he comes face to face with the ghost of Sifty Sifty Sam! This scary, yet humorous story's rhyming text and large watercolor illustrations make it a great read aloud for school-age children.

Kris, age 40 from California
Fantastic book! My own kids loved it so now that I'm a librarian I read it to all "my kids"! Parents, practice reading it aloud first so you can get the maximum effect of "scary". Kids under 3rd grade think it's going to be scary & clutch each other's hands, but then it turns out to be humorous. This is an ideal read aloud.

Catie, age 8 from Maryland
This book is great! But not scary.

Evan, age 9 from North Carolina
