Lisa Campbell Ernst (1998) , under 40 pages
Illustrated by Lisa Campbell Ernst
Audience: Preschool, Primary (k-3rd grade)
Category: Humor, Mystery, Read Aloud, Realistic Fiction
(This book has outstanding illustrations)

What would you do if your library book is due back and it has disappeared? Stella Louella finds herself in this very situation. She tries searching for the book in the last place she had it and discovers it's gone. Stella is soon racing against time to retrieve her book as it is passed, always one step ahead of her, to different readers throughout town. Even Officer Tim, who thought the book was a "classic tale of unlawful entry" is unable to locate the mystery book. Ernst's large pastel illustrations of the town following the frantic Stella add to the clues in the text as to what book she has lost. Before the end of the story, see if you can guess which book it is and see if Stella finds it.
