Hey all you cool cats out there! This
is the book for you! Walter Dean Myers
will give you a jazzy good time as you
read his poems about the great musical
artform-Jazz. Not sure where Jazz came
from, then dudes and dudettes, check
out the first poem in the collection.
It gives a short but sweet history of
this great music. The illustrations
groove and flow with each poem-pure
eyecandy. You will read with rhythm and
rhyme that will please every time! This
book is a syncopated treat and hard to
beat. Check it out!!

Jazz baby is having a jazzy good time
with a family that is wild about music.
There's snapping, clapping and some
mean toe-tapping! Granny sings and
Grandpa toots while Mama sings high and
Daddy sings low (the words
high and low are featured throughout
the book). What's a baby to do but to
have fun, fun, fun?!? You'll have fun
reading this appealing book and before
you know it, you will have some jazzy
fun of your own!

Joseph Had a Little Overcoat
Simms Taback (1999) , under 40 pages
Illustrated by Simms Taback
Audience: Preschool, Primary (k-3rd grade)
Category: Award Books, Multicultural, Read Aloud
|
This is the story of a man named Joseph
and his overcoat. When his overcoat
wears out, he makes it into a jacket.
Then his jacket becomes “old and worn”
and so he makes it into a vest. Over
time, the vest becomes a scarf, the
scarf a necktie, and so forth.
Finally, Joseph only has a button left.
And then he loses it! Yet, this isn’t
the end of the story, but in a way the
very beginning. The book is decorated
with Taback’s fun, bright illustrations
and each scene contains a die-cut hole
that is in the shape of a piece of
Joseph’s clothing. This delightful
story is based on a Yiddish folksong
that is featured in the back of the
book.

Melanie, age 42 from PA When I read this book to my students (Kdg.-2nd), they thoroughly
enjoyed the guessing game we played as to what would Joseph
make next. They all thought Joseph was quite creative. Nice
addition to my classroom read-aloud library.

Just because there are four girls named
Grace in her
classroom, does Grace Stewart have to
be stuck with the stupidest name -
Just
Grace? Just Grace is a funny,
insightful, clever eight-year-old who
loves lists, cats and drawing. She is
a good photographer and has a small
superpower of being able to tell when
someone is unhappy. When Just Grace
finds out her neighbor is unhappy, she
uses her creativity to try to make her
neighbor feel better but uh-oh, she
runs
into problems. And to solve one
problem, Just Grace must work with
yucky Sammy Stringer, who has the nasty
habit of picking his nose. Will they
be able to work together?
