netLibrary imageRecorded Books image

Note: You must have Microsoft Windows Media Player Version 9 or above to download and listen to NetLibrary’s Audiobooks. NetLibrary uses pop-up windows, so please assure that your browser does not block pop-ups.

Establish a NetLibrary Account

  1. Go to the alphabetical list of databases on the PLCMC Research/Homework page.

  2. Scroll down the list and click on the link for NetLibrary.

If you are creating an account from a computer outside the library, you will be prompted to enter your library card number. If you do not have a library card, you may apply for a card online.

  3. Click Create a Free Account.

  4. Fill in the required fields and click the Create Account button (write down your Username and Password)

  5. Close your Browser window and follow the instructions for returning users

Returning Users

  1. Go to www.netlibrary.com (Note: You must go to this URL directly; do not use the PLCMC Online Resources page link to NetLibrary.)

  2. Click on Log In.

  3. Enter your Username and Password then click the Log In button.

  4. Click on Audiobooks Center.

  5. Browse or search for an Audiobook.

  6. After finding the Audiobook that you would like to listen to, click Download this Audiobook.

Note: Audiobooks should ONLY be downloaded to your personal computer. Do NOT download to a public or library computer.

  7. Select Checkout & Download CD Quality or Radio Quality.

    • CD quality offers high-fidelity playback for patrons with high-speed Internet access. Note: Most portable listening devices do not support the playback of files lower than 32 kpbs, so you must download the CD quality file if you are going to transfer and listen to the audiobook on a portable listening device.
    • Radio quality provides faster download speeds and is ideal for patrons with dial-up connections.

  8. A message will appear telling you that the Audiobook has been successfully checked out to you. The Audiobook will then begin to download automatically—unless you have pop-up blockers installed. If you have pop-up blockers installed you will need to disable for netlibrary.com or download the Audiobook manually.

Note: Depending on how you play other media files, the Window’s Media Player might open and begin playing the Audiobook file. NetLibrary highly recommends that you do not play the file while it is downloading. The download will take longer and may not download correctly.

  9. Click Save to save the Audiobook file on your personal computer.

  10. Navigate to the directory where you would like to save the Audiobook file. Click the Save button.

  11. The file will begin to download.

  12. Locate and open the Audiobook file the same way you would any other file. Note: You MUST open the Audiobook file before disconnecting your Internet connection or you will be prompted to log in the first time you attempt to open the Audiobook file.

  13. After opening the file Windows Media Player will acquire the license from NetLibrary. Once the license is acquired the following screen will appear and you can begin to listen to the Audiobook on your computer by clicking Play.

  14. Depending on your Windows Media Player settings, you may be prompted to back up your licenses.

Downloading an Audiobook to a Portable Player

For a list of compatible portable devices please view NetLibrary’s Audiobook Center Tips.

Note: Most portable listening devices do not support the playback of files lower than 32 kpbs, so you must download the CD quality file if you are going to listen to the audiobook on a portable listening device. You will transfer the file from within Windows Media Player to your portable device. You must have Microsoft Windows Media Player Version 9 or above to download and listen to NetLibrary’s Audiobooks.

  1. If the Audiobook is playing in Windows Media Player click Stop.

  2. Connect your portable device.

  3. From within Windows Media Player click the Sync tab.

  4. Click Edit Playlist.

  5. Select Artist.

  6. Scroll down and find the author of the book you downloaded. Click on the author’s name. The title of the book should appear below. Click the title of the book to add to your Sync List. Click OK.

  7. Click Start Sync.

  8. Once the synchronization is complete your device will play the audio file. If it does not, please view NetLibrary’s Audiobook Center Tips to verify that your device is compatible. If your device is on the list and the audio file will not play, check your portable device’s support site for software updates or contact your portable device’s technical support for further assistance.
