As a result of the partnership between the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County and the Autism Society of North Carolina’s Mecklenburg County Chapter, training videos have been produced by PLCMC staff members who have been planning and presenting programming specific to children with special needs and their families since 2008. While the programming is geared for all types of special needs, the primary audience for this type of program is children on the autism spectrum.
"Between 1 and 1.5 million Americans are autistic. It is the fastest-growing developmental disability, seeing an increase of over 10% each year (Autism Society of America). It is no surprise, then, for librarians to be seeing increasing numbers of autistic children at their programs." - ALSC Blogpost by Kiera Parrott |
