Lois Yandle was a resident of the Highland Mill community in North Charlotte. When her five children grew up she devoted her time to historical research including the neighborhood where she grew up in Highland Mills. Yandle supported the efforts of 18 different related societies and various libraries. She began researching and documenting the lives and events of those who once called North Charlotte home. The culmination of her work appears in this exhibit and in her book, The Spirit of a Proud People. Most of the photographs in the exhibit represent the fruits of her research. Thanks to Lois Yandle, “the people on the hill" will be remembered.
About Lois Yandle
A Charlotte native, Lois Moore Yandle grew up in the Highland Mill community along with many of her relatives. She graduated from Technical High School and married Marcus E. Yandle. In 1960, the couple began their own company, Yandle-Witherspoon Supply, Inc.
In 1988, The Friends of the Archives, of which Mrs. Yandle is a life patron member, established the Lois Moore Yandle Fund to support preservation goals in the North Carolina State Archives. Since that time, Lois and her husband created a similar fund for the Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room. For her generous support and work with both institutions, Lois Yandle was awarded North Carolina’s highest civilian honor, bestowed from the governor, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 1992.
