This is the captivating (and humorous) story of Stanley Yelnats, an innocent kid accused of robbery, and how he ends up at Camp Green Lake, the detention center without a lake. There Stanley meets the mysteriously wicked Warden, the silent and secretive Zero, and he learns many other lessons about his past and friendship.

Spinelli, Jerry(2000)
Stargirl
Young Adult

What kind of person has a name like "Stargirl"? And who actually carries a pet rat around in her backpack, plays the ukulele right in the middle of the cafeteria, and cheers for both sides during a ballgame? The answer: someone that's just too weird for Mica High School. But just why do we think some people are "weird" and some people are "normal"? Once again author Jerry Spinelli encourages us to look at what we think is acceptable and shows us what can happen to those that challenge the "norm".

Reader's comments about this book

This book is written in Leo's voice, the boy who at first watches Stargirl from afar and then falls in love with her. This is their love story as well as a view on the ins and outs of conformity. Spinelli combines believable school experiences with larger-than-life moments that will captivate you till the end.
-Jeanenne, Morrison Regional Library

Just yesterday I finished reading this book. It really made me think. Stargirl, (or to some, Susan Caraway) moves from being homeschooled (like myself) to a High School where everyone is expected to be average and blend together. But when Stargirl arrives, she goes beyond just "weird". Strangely spun story; interestingly told.
-Abby, NC

I have just finished this book and I really loved it! At first, looking at the cover, I said to myself, "Wow, what a girly book". But after getting through the whole book, I realized 1) It's a book for all and 2) You really learn a lot of new things. I love reading Jerry Spinelli's books and I can't wait to read another!
-Aidan, New York

My eyes were opened when I read this book. It was interenting, insightful, and magical. It was a bit like the Mona Lisa-clear but foggy. I was hooked on it from the moment Stargirl entered the doors of Mica High to the very last word. I would reccomend this book to anyone looking for something full of laughter, cliffhangers, and a glance at the diffrences we all share.
-Courtney, SAn Antonio,TX

In "Stargirl" an interesting student shows up at Mica High. Being cool, but yet odd she manages to find a guy and make history at Mica High.

Ella Enchanted is a marvelous book! It is a fairy tale complete with fairies, giants, and ogres. Ella is given the gift of obedience, which is more of a curse than a gift. She is ordered around and has to obey. Poor Ella is turned into a servant because she must obey. She is afraid to marry her love because she might be forced to kill him for his money. Ella Enchanted is a great story. I recommend it to anyone who likes a story of triumph, love, and excitement!

Eragon
Young Adult

It only takes one moment to change your destiny. Eragon's life changed the day he found the blue stone. Enter Saphira, the dragon who emerges from the stone, leading Eragon towards a path filled with magic, danger, and a battle between good and evil, in a world where dragon riders once helped to keep the peace throughout the land. Eragon is suddenly forced to play a pivotal role in saving the empire from Galbatorix, a former dragon rider who has been attempting to take over all of Alagaesia. Reminiscent of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Paolini (only fifteen when he started writing) has created a new world for fantasy-lovers to immerse themselves in. Rich with colorful characters and lush landscapes, Eragon is luckily only book one in the Inheritance trilogy.

-Ben, Cary NC

This book is amazing! I couldn't believe it was written by a 15 year old! "Eragon" will go down in history for sure. I read it in under a week, and I loved the second one too. Totally unexpected twists everywhere. Action-packed, non-stop, loving it!!!! I love reading, and some people say you are a dork if you read. They don't know what they're missing. This is a great book!
-Emma, Sheffield, England

This is a pretty good book. A little dull here and there, but overall, well done. The movie doesn't do it justice at all!
-Fran, New York City, NY

AMAZING! This is definitely one of the BEST books I have ever read! I cannot wait to read Eldest. No matter what type of genre you like, you'll love this book! READ THIS BOOK!
-Natasha, Ohio

This book was absolutely amazing. Its one of the best I've ever read. Paolini is the artist and Eragon is the masterpiece. In my opinion, Eragon will be around for decades to come.
-Skippy, Oak Ridge, N.C

I love it, I love it, I love it!!! It was amazing and I am definitely going to recommend this book. It was a work of art.

This book is the best book I have ever read! It's AMAZING! It is waaaay better than Harry Potter, and I've read Harry Potter 3 times! It is phenomenal!
-Savanna, Victor, New York

One of the best books I've ever read. Paolini is a genius!! I loved every moment of it. Hurry up with the third book!!!!
-Stephen, Topsham, ME

Really good book, couldn't put it down! I tried reading it a couple of years ago, but I hated it. Later, I picked it up because I had run out of other things to read; finished it in under two days and went straight out to get the second one! I have only one negative thing to say: WHY ISN'T THE THIRD ONE OUT YET?!?!
-Arya, Newcastle

I think the The Inheritance Trilogy is the best series of books I've read. To me it beats Harry Potter out ten to one . So to anybody that likes dragons, swordfights, and adventure, Eragon and Eldest are two awesome books!
-Trent Franks, Milledgeville, GA

Eragon is a great book for readers who enjoy a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat. This book is by far the BEST book I have every read. Eragon deserves two thumbs up.
-Christopher, San Mateo, California

This book is by far my favorite book. I have read it over and over again. Now I just can't wait until the next book which I am positive will be just as amazing as the rest of his books!
-ashley Jenkins, Illinois

It was a very exhilarating book!! I enjoyed reading the book Eragon and I am glad that there are 2 more books to this trilogy.

Kuper, Peter(2003)
The Metamorphosis

Franz Kafka’s classic tale of Gregor Samsa, a man who wakes up one morning to discover he’s been transformed into a giant bug, proves to be a perfect fit with the graphic novel medium. Illustrator Peter Kuper uses a striking expressionistic black and white visual style which evokes the look of a woodcut. The alienation and pressures of responsibility bearing down on Samsa are echoed in the dark, claustrophobic look of most of the book—which is mostly set in a small apartment. Only at the end, when Samsa’s family takes a train trip to the country, does the atmosphere brighten. Not a light read, but a fascinating, completely successful merger of modern literature with the graphic medium.

Satrapi, Marjane(2004)
Persepolis 2

Marjane Satrapi’s story continues in this sequel to her graphic novel/memoir Persepolis. Using the same minimal black and white art style as the first book, she first tells of her new life as an Iranian expatriate in Vienna. Facing the trials of adolescence far from family and friends proves difficult: after four years she manages to graduate, but is homesick and returns to Iran. Re-adjusting to life at home is nearly as difficult as life abroad had been. She finds friends and begins a new life, but by the end of the narrative she has again decided she must leave Iran. Like the first book, Persepolis 2 is an honest depiction of the struggles of growing up, full of rich observations about society. Since there is no introduction or summary of past events, it would be best to read Persepolis first.

Do you love owls? Would you do practically anything to save them if you found they were in danger? Well the kids in the book Hoot, by Carl Hiaasen, would. Roy just moved from Montana to Coconut Cove, where he meets Beatrice and her step-brother, Mullet Fingers. When they hear there's a new pancake house coming to Coconut Cove, they are more then happy, until they find out there are owls in the burrows, and that the people at the construction site are going to kill them. No one believes there are owls out there, so it's up to the kids to save the day. This book won the Newberry Honor and is a New York Times best seller. I would rate this book a ten and would recommened this book to anyone who wants to go on a wild adventure.

Crank
Young Adult

Kristina has always been a good girl, until the summer before her senior year of high school, when her life changes forever. While visiting her long lost father, Kristina takes on the persona of Bree. Bree is everything Kristina is not – wild, flirty, bold. Bree quickly gets caught up in a world of parties and romance, and begins doing crystal meth, otherwise known as crank. Even after she returns home to the quiet suburbs, Kristina/Bree continues on her downward spiral into addiction. Author Ellen Hopkins’ use of free verse poetry pushes the plot forward, creating a sense of urgency that mirrors Kristina’s growing need for crank. Crank is an emotional page-turner that is, frighteningly, all too realistic.

Life on the Refrigerator Door: a novel in notes

"When I look at you
I see the Woman I want to be
Strong and Brave
Beautiful and Free"

Claire, who is 15, wrote this poem to her mom in a note she left on the refrigerator door. Alice Kuipers’s debut novel is told through notes between mother and daughter over the course of a year. Each section is prefaced with a line from the poem. The notes capture the angst and uncertainty of adolescence in Claire’s voice as well as her mom’s struggle to be a dedicated obstetrician and a single mom. A health crisis forces them to put their relationship in perspective. This is a great selection for a mother/daughter book club.

Set in the slums of Brooklyn during the early part of the 20th century, Betty Smith’s timeless coming of age story has charmed readers for over fifty years with its descriptive passages, richly developed characters, and universal themes. The story centers on the Nolan family and is told through the eyes of Francie, the intelligent and imaginative daughter of immigrants. The author explores themes of poverty, alcoholism, the value of education, and the strength of family, as well as the experience of immigrants who came to this country in search of a better life. Readers young and old will cheer for Francie, forced to leave school early, mistreated by fate and people—as she pushes forward, spirited and determined.

Elsewhere
Young Adult

Many of us wonder what happens when we die. 15-year-old Liz finds out when she dies unexpectedly. It seems that Liz is bound for Elsewhere, a place that is a lot like the world that we know, with a few major exceptions (like the fact that everyone ages backwards). Liz has a hard time accepting her new world and spends much of her time “watching” what’s happening with her family and friends. Can Liz learn to enjoy her new life, or will she throw it all away in an attempt to recover a life that she can no longer have? Elsewhere will make you think about what’s important in your life. This intriguing story would be a great book club pick.
