Apparitions, Spirits and Ghosts, Oh My!

Ever wonder what it would be like to be in the presence of a ghost? These books are full of characters that not only see, feel and hear these spirits but talk to and help these paranormal specters find their “light”. Mystical leanings abound in this selection of adult and young adult books with a paranormal penchant.

O'Barr, James and Ed Kramer(1998)
The Crow: Shattered Lives and Broken Dreams

A mixed anthology of short stories by many of science fiction's and fantasy's most celebrated writers, as well as poetry by such notable alterna-punk music figures as Iggy Pop and Henry Rollins. All are well written tales of the gothic punk avenger known as The Crow, and they range from the mediocre to the exceptional. Especially notable is Jane Yolen's "Carrion Crows", and the poem, "Fleas", by Iggy Pop. As anthologies go, this one is well done and breathes some life into an otherwise two-dimensional genre.

Harris, Charlaine(2005)
Grave Sight

When Harper Connelly was a child she was struck by lightning. While that is bizarre in itself, Harper was left with the ability to sense dead people. She can actually locate the graves of the dearly departed and tell you how they died. This unusual talent has lead Harper and her step-brother/manager Tolliver to the small town of Sarne, Arkansas in search of a missing teenager. While locating the body was easy, locating the killer turns out to be more than Harper and Tolliver bargained for. The first installment of this new series by the author of the Southern Vampire series, Charlaine Harris, leaves us wanting more. More adventure, more suspense, more Harper!

Avi(1988)
Something Upstairs: a Tale of Ghosts
Young Adult

Can you get rid of a ghost by traveling back in time and haunting the past? After moving into a house built in 1789, Kenny Huldorf finds a strange stain in the attic room that is going to be his bedroom. During his first night in the house, he comes face to face with a ghost. As the spirit communicates with Kenny, it takes him back in time to experience a world of inequality, and Kenny must make a decision between helping his new friend or being trapped in the distant past. Something Upstairs by Avi is an ingenious spin on the classic ghost story. A fantastic historical thriller from the very first page, this book will keep you guessing until the very end.

Hikaru no Go: Descent of the Go Master vol. 1

Hikaru Shindo, while rummaging through his grandfather’s junk for something to sell, finds an old Go board. To his surprise and dismay, the board is haunted and the spirit of ancient Go master, Fujiwara-no-Sai, who promptly moves into Hikaru’s consciousness. Hikaru now has to deal with a ghost who wants nothing more than to play Go, a game he has no interest in. Hikaru agrees to learn to play if Sai leaves him alone. This first volume deals with the beginning of his rivalry with Akira Toya, a brilliant Go prodigy. Hikaru no Go is an interesting manga that features not only a entertaining story but also sneakily teaches the basics of the complicated ancient game of Go to its readers.

Prom Nights from Hell
Young Adult

I bet you dreamed of your prom night, right? But, I bet you have not dreamed up a prom like these five authors. Meg Cabot, Kim Harrison, Michelle Jaffe, Stephanie Meyer and Lauren Myracle have created five paranormal prom stories that have taken the prom experience to new heights. Lauren Myracle, best known for her novels TTYL, and TTFN, delves into the art of fortune telling and curses in her story, "The Corsage". A story about a girl, her dream prom date and a wish gone bad, "The Corsage" is a bone tingling good read. With stories about vampires, angels versus devils, grim reapers and a boy rising from the dead you will not be disappointed in these bone-chilling short stories.

Swann, Leonie(2006)
Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Story

You will be doing yourself a disservice if you don’t read this book. It takes the most absurd premise and completely sells it through engaging characters and brilliant writing, made even more astounding by the fact that this is Ms. Swann’s first novel. George is a shepherd who is found dead impaled with a spade in his field one morning by his flock. The sheep, deeply upset by the death of the man who used to read to them and treat them well, set themselves out upon the task of discovering and unmasking his killer despite the threat posed by the butcher, a rival flock, and the threat of the ghost wolf. It is easily the best novel that I have read this year.

Wight, Eric(2007)
My Dead Girlfriend vol. 1: A Tryst of Fate

Finney Bleak is one of the few normal kids at a supernatural high school. His only claim to fame is that his family has a history of dying in spectacular ways. This doesn’t give you a cheery outlook on life or much of a great reputation when your classmates are witches, werewolves and vampires. Finney is lonely, sarcastic and withdrawn until he meets Jenny at the carnival and its love at first sight until he is stood up. His parents die, the bullying gets worse and he dreams of death. What more could go wrong when he’s cornered in the cemetery by the notorious Deadbeats gang? Darkly humorous yet charming all the same, My Dead Girlfriend is a wonderful read – don’t pass it up.
