Channeling Jane: Books Inspired by Jane Austen

Many writers have been inspired by the works of Jane Austen. Here are reviews of a few titles.

Fielding, Helen(1998)
Bridget Jones's Diary

Bridget Jones's Diary chronicles the life of its thirtysomething title character as she begins the new year, hung over and on a decided quest for "inner poise." Bridget confides in the reader via various lists - her caloric intake, the number of cigarettes smoked, the amount of alcohol imbibed, for example. We are privileged to hang out with Bridget and her other "singleton" friends as they discuss their other acquaintances, the "smug marrieds." After various lusty e-mails with her boss concerning the length of her skirt, Bridget embarks on a torrid affair with the smoothy Daniel. This book lives up to its hype - it's laugh-out-loud funny and impossible to put down.

Barron, Stephanie(1997)
Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor

In this first Jane Austen Mystery, Jane finds herself deeply involved in a murder investigation that hinges on the motives of Scargrave Manor’s mysterious guests, each with a possible motive for murder. Isobel Payne, the wife of the murder victim, is the prime suspect, but Jane Austen knows her dear friend is innocent and must use her powers of observation for sleuthing. A missing locket, monogrammed handkerchief, an ancestral ghost, and the deadly fruit of a tropical tree are the clues that will lead Jane to the truth. Fans of Austen and of mysteries alike will enjoy this page-turner set in Victorian England.

Fielding, Helen(1999)
Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason

A sequel often has trouble living up to the spirit, wittiness and overall enjoyability of the original, however Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason fully lives up to the hype. Our favorite singleton, Bridget Jones, has a new boyfriend (Mark Darcy), and a new job as a journalist. Never fear however, she is still the same calorie-counting, almost smokeless, self-help guru she has always been. The novel brings back many characters from the first novel including her parents who are giving it another try, and most of her singleton and "smug married" friends. This novel takes Bridget down the "road less traveled" with memorable, hysterical detours of self-discovery along the way.

Smith, Debra White(2006)
Amanda

Set in Australia, this book is an amusing, fast read based on Jane Austen’s Emma. Amanda (like Emma) is a matchmatcher with good intentions, especially for her friend Haley, who represents Harriet Smith. Nate Knighton (similar to George Knightley) is Amanda’s life-long friend. But one day in a restaurant he sees a woman in a shadowed corner that appears to be flirting with him. He soon finds out that it is Amanda and he begins to have unexpected feelings for her. Will Amanda ever learn to stay out of Haley’s love life and concentrate on her own? Although this book is based on a classic, the setting, modern time period, and Christian spin make it a very different story.

Hale, Shannon(2007)
Austenland

Jane Hayes is a thirty something career girl with a history of broken love, a secret Jane Austen fan who feels real life romance seems to never measure up to the written word. Upon her Aunt’s death she finds that for her inheritance she has been provided with a three week stay to Pembrook Place, a British resort where Regency England and Austen-like romance come alive for a price. Trapped between the memories of her real life failed romances and the fictional Mr. Darcy-like actors of Pembrook, Jane struggles to play her part while holding tight to the reins of her somewhat frazzled reality. Witty and charming if not quite what Austen might approve, Hale provides a funny memento for the modern day Austen fan.

Pattillo, Beth(2009)
Jane Austen Ruined My Life

A delicious romance! Not just a great read for Austen fans, although it may inspire you to read her works. After a painful divorce and losing her job, Emma Douglas gambles everything on a trip to London. She hopes to discover Austen’s secret letters and publish them in order to restore her good name. Right away things become complicated... she runs into her old friend Adam and she must pass several tests to earn Austen’s letters. How will Emma know the right decisions to make? Will they be for herself or to please others? Can Emma’s life ever by like a Jane Austen novel? More than romance, this story explores a woman’s journey in finding out who she really is… or wants to be.
