Q&A with Sandra Brown

Q: Ms. Brown, can you share with us something about yourself that is not commonly known?

A: That I anguish over not being a better writer that I am.

Q: How closely are your characters allied with individuals from your own experiences and life, or are they completely imaginative creations?

A: They are totally imaginative creations. None of my friends are exciting enough to write about.

Q: How do you come up with your ideas for your next novel? Do you think of a title first, a character first, or does a life event create a plot for you?

A: Ideas have occurred several ways. I have started with a character –like Paris in HELLO, DARKNESS. Most often I find an intriguing situation or contemporary controversy as the background subject matter.

Q: Do you have a favorite mystery writer(s) who impressed you so much that you wanted to write mysteries yourself?

A: I’ve been influenced by several writers, not all “mystery” writers. Tennessee Williams, Taylor Caldwell, Irwin Shaw.

Q: How has being a successful writer changed your life?

A: It’s changed my lifestyle favorably, but not my personality or values.

Q: If you hadn't become so successful a writer, what would have been your natural second choice for a career?

A: I wanted to be a dancer. But if I weren’t a writer now, I would be a floral designer.
