Empires of Light: Edison, Tesla, Westinghouse, and the Race to Electrify the World

Empires of Light has the characters and storyline of a TV drama but is educational to boot. There is Edison, a brilliant visionary and such a hard worker. Obsessed with retaining the upper hand in the blossoming electricity industry, he went so far as to stealthily endorse electricity as a new method of execution, but only his competitors' brand. Nikola Tesla, a young prodigy whose ideas ranged from the revolutionary to the fantastic, was deathly afraid of women's earrings. George Westinghouse, a hardworking industrialist, refused to crumble under extreme pressure from a new breed of economic powerhouse, the mega-corporation General Electric. The story of how America became electrified is also that of an adolescent nation defining itself in the midst of the industrial revolution.

Dark Summit: the True Story of Everest’s Most Controversial Season

Dark Summit relates the story of David Sharp, the British climber who was left to die near Everest’s top while forty climbers passed by. Sharp was on his own, not a member of a group, with no support, no Sherpa, and very little oxygen. Although many stopped to assist him, he still died. The book also includes the story of Lincoln Hall, an Australian climber who summitted. On the way down, he quickly floundered. Hall was declared dead and left on the mountain, but he survived the night. He was found by climbers the next morning and survived. Everest is a very dangerous place. This book gives an accounting of why it continues to draw climbers from all over and how it can so quickly kill.

Boy Meets Boy
Young Adult

Boy Meets Boy is a great, quick read. The story follows a group of young adults, gay and straight, who struggle with all things high school. In his unique and compelling way, Levithan has carefully crafted a world in which the notion of “being gay” is secondary to being a teenager. This approach allows the reader to see just how similar we all are and that even the things we believe make us different don’t isolate us from common experiences. The characters are wonderfully diverse and full of quirks! You will find yourself rooting them on! I would recommend this title for older young adults.
