Step into the old west with this month's feature on Western fiction. Cowboys and cowgirls, saloons, gunfights, John Wayne: all of these images come to mind, often fuelled by the many Western films that are still loved today. Authors like Larry McMurtry and Louis L'Amour immediately come to mind, even to readers who haven't read many westerns. This month, we feature some of the lesser-known books available for adults and young adults. So, pull up a chair, kick off your boots, and enjoy the wild, wild west.

Here is an excerpt of Margaret Maron’s review of Collected Poems by Edna St. Vincent Millay:

"A favorite book that has influenced me? Collected Poems by Edna St. Vincent Millay. I discovered Millay when I was eleven and she made me want to write. She took me through the heartbreak of adolescence, she consoled me through deaths and disappointments as I grew older, she sustains me now in middle age."

Reader's Club: Your Guide to Enjoyable Books

Clyde Edgerton's decision to be a serious writer was a very deliberate one, but somewhat of a surprise even to him. It happened one night as he watched author Eudora Welty read one of her stories on public television. That night he wrote in his journal: "May 14, 1978 - Tomorrow, May 15, 1978 - I would like to start being a writer." That was the beginning of a career that has resulted in the creation of seven novels, including Raney, Walking Across Egypt, and Where Trouble Sleeps. Their critical reception led to his receiving several honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and five Notable Book awards from the New York Times. His latest novel is Lunch at the Picadilly.

This month Reader’s Club salutes Rachel, a young adult librarian at University City Regional Library:

"Reading has always been a passion of mine since I was young. I enjoy reading mysteries since they are always exciting and have twists and turns throughout the story. Reading opens the mind to new places and ideas. It is always an adventure when you open a book. Writing reviews is a great way to share titles and authors of books that maybe people haven’t heard of. It is fun to tell people about different books and to have a way to voice your opinion. I enjoy sharing ideas and books with people."
