Historical Fantasy combines refers to fiction that has elements of historical fiction and fantasy. Popular authors include Susanna Clarke, George R.R. Martin and J. R.R. Tolkien.

Feel Good Fiction

Authors such as Jan Karon, Ann B. Ross, Joan Medlicott, J. Lynne Hinton and Philip Gulley write warm, witty books that provide a great escape from the real world.

Reel Reads: Books into Movies
With so many new films being released based on extremely popular books (Harry Potter, Bourne Identity, About a Boy, etc.), it is always fascinating to look back at how Hollywood adapted other books for the 'silver screen' (for better or worse). Actress, Tyne Daly's review of Granny’s Wonderful Chair by Frances Browne:

My favorite childhood book, which made me more certain than ever (at 8 years old) to become a storyteller myself, is called Granny's Wonderful Chair by Francis Browne. These are tales from a time when fairies were still in the world and still had power to charm and delight. Reading is important to me because it offers me nothing less than all the world of human thought. It is one of the great gifts and helps to balance this life (too much??) I love reading - put it that way.

Reviewer Spotlight

Teresa, manager of Cornelius Branch Library, frequently reviews fiction and non-fiction for adults. Here are her thoughts on reading and writing reviews:

I enjoy fiction, non-fiction and biographies. As for adult fiction, my reading tastes seem to cycle around. I cycle between suspense/thriller, southern family/community tales, then off for a round of humorous mysteries. Characterization is an important element. I am more likely to write a review for something when the characters linger with me. Series titles offer this element, especially if the writer leaves you wanting more. Often I just follow a favorite author like Joan Medlicott, Elizabeth Berg, or Janet Evanovich. For me, reading is the key to life long learning and entertainment that is FREE at a public library! Why wouldn’t people want to share the wealth within these magnificent places?

I rarely reread a book, but I enjoy reading To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee every few years. This is a deeply moving book on so many levels. Each time I read it I discover a nugget not noticed before. Clifton Fadiman said, “When you reread a classic you do not see more in the book than you did before; you see more in you than there was before.
