Celebrity Reviewer Here is an excerpt from radio host and author Cooper Lawrence's review of Can't Stop Won't Stop: a History of the Hip-Hop Generation by Jeff Chang:

If you see music as a reflection of the cultural and historical time in which it was created, you will see that Chang's book describes a unique creative form of youth rebellion in a post-civil rights era. A time that was defined by a new found capitalism and a newly global and highly industrialized society. He describes that generation's worldview and how it transformed not just music and pop culture but commented on American politics and multiculturalism like no other generation before. This book tells an American history story through its generation's musical roots but also shows how the integration of all races who created this musical genre was mirrored in the social bond being formed and is a harbinger of social change to come. It is the most urgent and passionate narrative of Hip-Hop culture, but also American culture. Chang is really describing all of us and what American life is about.

Author Spotlight Even though Gabrielle Zevin has been writing for most of her life, she never thought she would ever write a novel. All of that changed one morning after she stayed up all night reading - she had her first line, then her first chapter to her first book. As of July 2008, she has authored three captivating and successful novels: Elsewhere, Margarettown and Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac. Each has received impressive awards and honors as her stories challenge tradition and engage readers of all ages. Prior to this, she was making a living as a screenwriter after graduating from Harvard with a degree in English and American Literature in 2000. One of her screenplays, Conversations with Other Women, is now a feature film for which she received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best First Screenplay in 2007. Reviewer Spotlight Reader’s Club salutes Julie, a weekend librarian at South County Regional Library. She is a prolific reviewer of teen fiction and non-fiction. Here are her thoughts on reading and writing reviews:

“As a weekend librarian, I find writing reviews helps me to stay connected during the week. I load up with a bunch of books when I leave on Sunday evenings so I’ll be sure to have plenty to read before I return. At first, I struggled to keep my reviews between 100-125 words. If I enjoyed a book enough to write about it, then I had a lot to say! I read a variety of genres but you couldn't tell it by looking at my reviews. The books I usually absolutely love are mysteries, and just about any kind of book that features a strong female protagonist. My top seven favorite books of all time are: The Suitcases by Anne Hall Whitt, The Stand by Stephen King, Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, Raney by Clyde Edgerton, Cruel & Unusual by Patricia Cornwell, Our Only May Amelia by Jennifer L. Holm, and Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen. Books are some of my best friends, and I love sharing my friends with other readers!”
