Channeling Jane: Books Inspired by Jane Austen
Many writers have been inspired by the works of Jane Austen. Here are reviews of a few titles.

Beach Reading
It's summer time and the reading is easy. It is time for sand, surf, sun, and beach books!

Graphic Novels
Graphic novels are not comic books. They just happen to tell a story with the accompaniment of, often, impressive illustrations. Some graphic novels center around the superheroes we have all heard of, but many do not. From stand-alone titles to Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series or Jeff Smith's Bone series, graphic novels offer something for all age groups and all interests. If you’ve never read a graphic novel, check out some of our recommended titles.

Celebrity Reviewer Here is an excerpt from actor Edward Asner's review of Empire Falls by Richard Russo:

There are many books which we can exult in but for now I would strongly recommend and praise Richard Russo's Empire Falls, last year's Pulitzer Prize winner. It is a book filled with tragedy, comedy and irony. Most people can identify with the protagonist's inner thoughts, observations and, hopefully, his patience. It lovingly shows our hero coping, dealing with the vicissitudes we all can experience with family, friends, and society. This is truly everyman and we love him for his love and his attempts to salvage his loved ones and, in short, "make things nice." I strongly praise this book.

Author Spotlight A native of the west side of Chicago, Jacquelyn Mitchard never studied writing beyond freshman electives, but she read everything she could buy or borrow. Her first novel, The Deep End of the Ocean, was named by USA Today as one of the ten most influential books of the past 25 years. It was chosen as the first novel in the book club made famous by the TV host Oprah Winfrey, and transformed into a feature film produced by and starring Michelle Pfeiffer. Jacquelyn has continued to write bestsellers for both adults and young adults. She is also a contributing editor for the Disney parenting magazine Wondertime, as well as writing pieces for More, Parade and Real Simple, among other magazines. Her syndicated column for Tribune Media appears in newspapers around the nation. Jacquelyn and her children, Rob, Dan, Marty, Francie, Mia, Will and Atticus, currently live in a house built by Mitchard’s husband, Chris, on Story Hill in south central Wisconsin.

Reviewer Spotlight This month, Reader’s Club recognizes Amy from Steele Creek Branch Library. She is a voracious reader and has reviewed fiction for adults and teens. Here are her thoughts on reading and writing reviews:

“I have been an avid reader since I was very young. My mother was a big influence and introduced me to many great authors and series. I started reading at the age of 4 and haven’t stopped since. My summers as a child were spent reading The Babysitters Club, Nancy Drew, and Trixie Belden.

I have read books in almost every genre, but my favorites are romance and fiction. My favorite authors are Nicholas Sparks, Debbie Macomber, Kristin Hannah, and Luanne Rice. The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah, and Between Friends by Debbie Macomber are my favorites.

If I really like a book, I always review it at Reader’s Club so someone else will have the joy of reading the same great book.”
