Lawrence has been a valuable contributor to Reader's Club, and we especially appreciate him as a source of information about one of PLCMC's newest collections, graphic novels. Here's what Lawrence has to say:
"Although I'd be the first to admit that I need to read more than I do, I know that if you want to have a clue about what's going on in the world, you've got to read and read regularly. As I've grown up, I've found reading is an amazing way to find out about different types of people and different ways of thinking about the world.
My favorite books to read are biographies and mysteries. My interest in mysteries grew from watching TV crime dramas and movies. When I am pressed for time, however, I read mostly for news and political opinions. I never skip the "letters to the editor" section in the newspaper.
Book reviews are a fun challenge as a short writing exercise with doses of creativity. I have enjoyed submitting book reviews to the "Reader's Club" web site and see it as an opportunity to champion my job-related assignments. I work with my library's mystery readers club and I sometimes submit reviews of our selected titles. If it's a worthwhile read, I want to share it. I also handle social science titles and I like to promote these non-fiction titles that may slip under the radar of many readers.
Finally, I've enjoyed writing reviews for an old favorite--comic books, which are now available through many graphic novels. I work with the library system's selection team for graphic novels. In some instances, I've rediscovered some favorite superheroes from my teens such as "Daredevil" and "Spiderman." In other instances, I'm discovering new heroes and comic book characters with engaging stories to tell. And, finally, when I review graphic novels I regularly comment on the artwork in the book and how it helps to shape a story."
Thanks, Lawrence!
