Ridley, Matt(1999) Genome: The Autobiography of a Species in 23 Chapters
In Genome, Matt Ridley does an exceptional job of describing the most prominent health issue of the 21st century: the study of the genetic material of an organism. Genome is cleverly divided into 23 chapters; each focused on one of humankind’s 23 chromosomes. In each chapter, that particular chromosome becomes the main protagonist, complete with a description of the relationship between the chromosome and our genetic makeup. It was recently announced that three of North Carolina’s research universities are allocating more than $700 million in a ground-breaking effort to advance the study of genomics. After reading Genome, the reader will quickly understand why. To a significant degree, our genes shape who we are, what we do, and why. Future diagnosis and cures, understanding of behavior and characteristics, will be predicated on our knowledge of our genetic structure. I encourage anyone interested in health and wellness to read Ridley’s Genome and understand why this issue is so vital
