Walk Two Moons
Young AdultSalamanca Tree Hiddle is thirteen and very proud of her Native American heritage. Her mother has left unexpectedly with a promise to return "before the tulips bloom". One morning in April, Sal and her grandparents embark on a car trip from Ohio to Idaho, retracing her mother's route, as she has not returned. Sal tells the story of her friend, Phoebe, also abandoned. The account of Phoebe is intertwined with Sal's journey. Sal has a sense of urgency in her voyage, to reach Idaho in time for her mother's birthday and to bring her back with them to live. Her grandparents believe this is a "whisper in the wind". Native American folklore and tradition are important in this Newbery Award winning book, and it is rich with indigenous wit and a memorable storyline.

This wonderful, terrifically written story is especially captivating and thorough. It tells the story of Salamanca Hiddle, who travels across the U.S. west, searching for her mother and herself. She meets interesting characters along the way, Phoebe Winterbottom, the girl with a powerful imagination, Ben Finney, an interesting boy, and Margaret, the neighbor who could be an axe murderer. Fantastic! When Salamanca Tree Hiddle gets stuck in a car with her grandparents as they travel across the west, she unravels the story of Phoebe Winterbottom. But as the story of Phoebe unfolds, so does Sal's story. Excellent!
