Kohler, Sheila(2010) Becoming Jane Eyre
What would a plain, quiet, single young lady living with her family in the desolate English moors know about great passion? And how could she succeed in writing and publishing one of the greatest love stories of all time in the early 1800s, when women weren’t allowed to publish their works? Using many biographical facts, Shelia Kohler believably recreates the life of Charlotte Bronte and her motivations in writing Jane Eyre. We discover who inspired the novel's characters and how Charlotte lives vicariously through Jane Eyre. The talented Bronte family comes to life in their trials and tribulations: the close sisters, who were fellow-writers; the charming, spoiled brother addicted to alcohol and opiates; and the somewhat cold-natured father, who was a pastor. This an interesting and engrossing read, especially for fans of the Brontes.
