Fitzgerald, Frances(1972)
Fire in the Lake: The Vietnamese and the Americans in Vietnam

Winner of the Pulitzer and other prizes, this book, a cultural rather than a combat history, remains after 30 years a classic as well as a valuable source on the Vietnamese and America's ill-fated decision to meddle in their revolution. More than anything else, it makes crystal clear the profound difference in values and the total lack of understanding between the two cultures. Indeed, the application of lessons learned and - more importantly - not learned in the "American War" suggest that history is hell-bent upon repeating itself again and again until America learns to walk a mile in other cultures' shoes.
